The effect of aliphatic sulfides (dilauryl P,P'-thiopropionate, di-npropyl sulfide,di-n-propyl sulfoxide, a-2,4,6-trimethyl-l,3,5-trithiane) on photopolymerization of 1,4-butanediol dimethacrylate based compositions has been studied in the presence of photofragmenting initiators of various activities. The reaction was carried out for the layer thickness of 0.05 or 1.1 mm at temperature of 40 or 80°C in air or argon atmospheres. Various effects of sulfides on photopolymerization have been found. The effect is a resultant of simultaneous accelerating and retarding processes where their ratio depends on the chemical structure of sulfide and on the conditions of photopolymerization (atmosphere, temperature, type and concentration of initiator, layer thickness). The significance of reaction (1) — chain transfer on sulfide due to hydrogen atom abstraction from sulfide during photopolymerization — has been pointed out.
