The effect of unsaturated polyester resins on the rheological properties of coal-tar pitch

Summary

An unsaturated polyester resin added to coal tar pitch was found to reduce the content of benzo[a]pyrene in the pitch by more than 90 % and at the same time to modify substantially the physicochemical and rheological properties of the pitch. The modifications of the rheological properties of the pitch caused by polyester resin were found to be related neither to the resin type nor to the presence of an initiating system. Pitch-polyester blends were shown to exhibit the non-Newtonian flow behavior, which varied with temperature. Unsaturated polyester resins reduced the viscosity of the pitch and enhanced its thixotropic properties. Tire beneficial rheological properties of the compositions will enable the blends to be used as binders, e.g., in insulating and sealing masses used for building applications.
