The evaluation of the possible autothermicity in the feed zone of a screw extruder on the basis of simulation

A set of differential equations describing the character of pressure and temperature changes in the material in the feed zone of a screw extruder was presented. The simulation calculations for PE-LD give the distribution of pressure and temperature along the screw channel and show that the temperature increase in the material depends on the design features of the extruder (degree of helicity of screw grooves and screw length). It is possible to choose such conditions (high pressure, long screw, high helicity angles of the grooves) as to reach inside the material its melting point.
