The physical chemistry and thermodynamics of semicolloidal polymer-bitumen systems.

Part II. Polymers as coal-tar-pitch modifiers

Polimery 1998, No 1, 17

DOI: dx.doi.org/10.14314/polimery.1998.017

Summary

Literature reports and author's own papers are reviewed, covering polymer effects on the chemical and physical colloidal structure of coal tar pitch and on the compatibility of pitch-polymer blend constitutents. Preparation of homogeneous stable pitch-polymer blends is discussed in relation to the nature of the polymer used as pitch modifier. Coal-tar ahd petroleum pitches (bitumens) are compared as constituents of bitumen- polymer blends. Reduction of benzo[a]pyrene concentration through dilution of the coal-tar pitch with a polymer, suppresses cancerogenicity.

Keywords: polymer, bitumen, polymer-bitumen blends, compatibility, chemical structure
