Thermodynamic and physico-chemical aspects of polymer compatibility are discussed with a view to prepare homogeneous and stable polymer—bitumen systems, with particular reference to the thermodynamic characteristics of polymer mixtures and solutions, their correlations and the homogeneity of polymer compositions. Thermodynamic models are presented for asphalt's colloidal structure and its modifications caused by polymers. So far the thermodynamics of coal-tar pitches and polymer—pitch systems has been very little looked into.
