Summary

An original ICRI process has been developed for making polyacetals, based on copolymerization of 1,3,5-trioxane with 1,3-dioxolane in the presence of boron trifluoride as a catalyst. The polymerization is carried out in the molten monomer phase ina continuous-type screw extruder. This process has been commercialized and serves as a basis for the 10,000 – ton per-year production of Tamoform. Progressive development from bench to pilot-plant and industrial-production scale has been described. Correct process course and reactor scale-up problems (heat transfer, transportation, mixing, and comminution of the reacting system) have been emphasized.
