The synthesis and properties of epoxyfumaric resins containing bromine

Summary

Addition of a nascent monoester formed from maleic anhydride and 2,3-dibromo-l-propanol to bisphenol A based epoxy resin Epidian 6 and isomerization of maleic to fumaric derivatives gave six resins of different bromie contents. 2,3-Dibromo-l-propanol is a reactive flame retardant. The uncured resins were examined (viscosity, time of gelation, color) (Table 2) and the cred resins were studied (mechanical and thermomechanical properties, combustibility, thermal resistance, water absorption) (Tables 2–6) and compared with those of an indigenous self-extinguishing polyester resin Polimal 160 (resin 7, Tables 2–4). The epoxy-fumaric resins are characterized by higher deflection temperatures and higher elasticity.
