Ultrafiltration membranes from the polyacrylonitrile spinning solution

Summary

The procedure used in the preparation of ultrafiltration membranes from the polyacrylonitrile spinning solution, the structure o£ these membrans as well their trans­port and separation characteristics have been presented. Membranes in the form of sheets and tubes have been prepared by the phase separation method both from the genuine spinning solution and from casting solutions obtained by diluting the 50 per cent spinning solution with a solution of sodium thiocyanate. As gelation agent water at room temperature has been applied. The structure of these membranes has been determined by electron microscopy and an analysis of photomicrographs of cross-sections of the membranes. The porous structure has been characterized by an analysis o£ the nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms and by studies on mem­branes permeability in the isobutanol-water system. The transport properties of the membrans have also been determined in respect to water, solutions of macromolecular substances [proteins. dextranes. poly(ethylene glycols)] and colloids (ES-oil emulsion).
