Unsaturated polyester resins at the Erg Polymer Works Pustkow SA

Property data are presented (Table 1) on several groups of unsaturated polyester resins ("Estromals") produced at the Erg (Pustkow, Poland). A new fully automated installation allows to make standard and tailor-made Estromals. Modern thixotropizing procedures applied to resins are summarized. The development trends include the use of PET and dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) in the synthesis of the resins. Especially PET enables resins with enhanced thermal stability and mechanical properties to be produced. The DCPD-containing resins show lower shrinkage on curing, enhanced resistance to UV rays, and no "viscous surface" phenomenon.
