Unsaturated polyester resins: the 40 years of research in Poland

The literature (111 references over 1957-1995, including Authors’ own works) is reviewed on the UPR studies and technological development in Poland. Syntheses of starting materials and polyesters which exhibit specific properties like chemical resistance, flexibility, emulsifiability in water, etc. are described. The Polish innovative contribution to the utilization of PET scrap is mentioned. Practical importance of the styrene evaporation suppressing additives, flame retardants and smoke suppressants is emphasized. Studies oncuring of UPRs, selection of radical polymerization initiators and other additives are discussed. New research works on the structure of UPRs by 1H-NMRand 13C-NMR spectroscopy are described. Studies on reinforced polyesters and polyester molding compounds are presented. Correlations between the properties that are important in various areas of application are considered.
