Use of gel-permeation chromatography for the characterization of polymer membranes

A method has been developed to characterize the transport properties of ultrafiltration membranes. A solution of polydisperse polimer is employed and one sample of feed and permeate is taken to analyse it after a single ultrafiltration test. An analysis of the amount of polymer in each stream and the determination of its molecular weight distribution by means of gel-permeation chromatography allow a complete cut-off characterization of the membrane in a broad molecular weight range.
