Manufacturing processes used in the "Unicom" Foreign Enterprise for the production of granulate, fines and reclaim from rubber scrap were presented. Particular attention was paid to the process of reclaim manufacture comprising a step of devulcanization by a simultaneous action of mechanical forces and elevated temperature in a screw devulcanizer of the type of a special extruder with a big and changing screw diameter. Reclaim obtained from different rubber scrap was characterized and the processing and mechanical properties of rubber compounds with various content of reclaimed rubber (up to 55 mass-%) determined. The addition of reclaim results in some deterioration of mechanical properties, but improves thermo-oxidative resistance and reduces the price of vulcanizate. Problems connected with securing sufficient quantities of raw material for reclaiming and caused by the presently valid complete prohibition of imports of rubber scrap to Poland were discussed and it was postulated that in this case rubber scrap should be treated as a enuine raw material.
