Verification of the values of the equilibrium melting parameters of poly(ethylene terephthalate)

Summary

On the basis of the rectilinear dependence of temperature and heat of melting on the index of crystalline network perfectness, the equilibrium melting parameters of PET have been determined by extrapolation. The temperature and heat of melting have been determined by the differential calorimetry method and the index of perfectness by the X-ray method. The results of investigations for specimens in various forms, it means in the form of film and fibre, have been treated statistically and analyzed under assumption of various, quite different concepts concerning their crystalline network. It has been found that the most probable values of the equilibrium melting parameters of PET are: melting temperature TTo = 258 ± 6 °C and heat of melting ΔH=: 135 ± 2 J/g.
