Summary

A quick and precise method of determination of organic hydroxyl groups content is presented. The method is based on hydroxyl groups acylation with pyromellitic dianhydride (DBPM) in acetone, catalyzed with 1-methylimidazole (MIA). Acylation occurs within 5 minutes at room temperature and the excess of DBPM is quickly hydrolyzed. This method is applicable for aliphatic hydroxyl groups determination in alcohols, polyesters and polyethers. Phenolic and epoxy groups do not react in the reaction conditions. The precision of the method is as follows: repeatability (expressed as RSDr) 2 % and reproducibility (expressed as RSDR) 3%.
