Influence of cellulose on mechanical and thermomechanical properties

of elastomers obtained from mixtures containing natural rubber

Summary

Blends of natural rubber (NR) containing 10—30 phr mechanically disintegrated cellulose fibres — in form of processed scrap paper (CP) or cotton mat (CB) — were transformed into vulcanizates. The obtained elastomers were examined for mechanical and thermomechanical properties under dynamic conditions (DMTA), abrasion resistance, hardness, Schob elasticity and density. It has been found that the addition of cellulose (independently of its origin) increases the density and abrasive wear of vulcanizates and results in the lowering of tensile strength and elongation at break. A decrease in elasticity and an increase in hardness of the vulcanized rubber-cellulose blends was observed with increasing the content of cellulose fibres. Thermomechanical analyses showed that the used amount of cellulose additive practically does not influence the glass transition temperature of vulcanizates. The maximum value of loss modulus (E”) was measured for the material with the largest content of cellulose (30 phr).
