Summary

A broad review of the literature related to the most important research in the structure of supermolecular segmented polyurethanes has been presented. The structural elements of segmented polyurethanes as well as direct and indirect experimental methods applied in their evaluation have also been described (Figs. 1, 2). Particular attention has been paid to the indirect investigation methods such as electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy used in the determination of the micro- and nanostructures of segmented polyurethanes (Figs. 3-12). The fact that nanometric structures also known as domains, global and spherulite micrometer structures depend on the type of polyurethane was established. The structural domains can be spherical, ellipsoidal, cylindrical or lamellar in shape. In the case of the presence of micrometric scale structures, nanometric internal lammelles can be found to exist on their internal space while amorphous domains are located on the external side in the regions between spherulites and globules. The important issue of the destructive effect of Transmission Electron Microscopy on the polyurethane samples occurring during analysis has been emphasized.
