Summary

A kinetic study was carried out on the reaction of methacrylic acid with an epoxy bisphenol A resin ("Epidian 6®”), run in the presence of chromium (III) acetate used as catalyst. A kinetic model was suggested and reaction rate constants were calculated (Table 1). The mechanism of the reaction (eqns. (5)–(7)) was discussed. An illustrative temperature model is presented for the synthesis (Table 2). The methacrylic acid–"Epidian 6” adduct was used to prepare a number of vinyl ester resins of low styrene contents (25 wt.%); density, viscosity and reactivity were determined for these resins (Table 3).
